Facing your fears

03 Nov

Everyone fears something. But we face those fears, fight them and, eventually, overcome them.

Once I was afraid to mount a horse. Now, there is a mare at our small school farm. When I was supposed to ride her, I got scared. I thought I was going to fall and get hurt. My friends were trying hard to persuade me to do it anyway. I hesitated, but finally decided to give it a go. My friends helped me mount her. Slowly but with determination in my voice, I gave her the commands…to go, halt, turn left, turn right… It felt great! I have been the first one to ride her ever since. My confidence grew each time I rode her in circles.

A few weeks ago, however, the mare got upset and mounted on her hind legs. A moment later I hit the ground. Luckily I was not hurt. When I calmed down, I decided to ride her again. At first, a friend of mine held the reins but soon I felt confident enough to do it on my own.

“The more radical the person is, the more fully he or she enters into reality so that, knowing it better, he or she can transform it. This individual is not afraid to confront, to listen, to see the world unveiled.― Paulo Freire
